Natural, Non-Invasive and Cutting-Edge

Cryotherapy is a natural, non-invasive, therapeutic treatment to reduce pain and inflammation using very low temperatures. It uses brief and intense exposure to gasiform nitrogen to lower the skin’s temperature to 41-50 °F and the chamber temperature can drop to -195 °F. The skin signals the brain, which creates stimulation of immune and basic body systems, and in turn, releases endorphins and blocks pain.

The result of this extreme cold is vasoconstriction (contraction) of the blood vessels followed by vasodilation (expansion). The blood returning to the extremities is highly oxygenated and nutrient-rich, which helps the body repair and strengthen itself. Once out of the chamber, the body reheats. The positive, buoyant effects can often be seen in the minutes after, and up to 8 hours after your session. With a series of sessions, the effect may be experienced for longer durations. During your session, your body releases endorphins – hormones that make you feel good and energetic. Many clients report a better night sleep after just one session.

Whole Body Cryotherapy was started in 1978 in Japan by Dr. Toshiro Yamauchi, who used it to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Many other health and wellness benefits have emerged over the years, and Whole Body Cryotherapy is now endorsed by many elite doctors and health professionals, and is used by Olympic athletes and professional and collegiate athletes.

A private chamber, cooled by nitrogen

We offer a nitrogen-cooled chamber with your head above the chamber (without a face mask) throughout the whole session. The chamber is totally enclosed to allow you complete privacy instead of standing in your underwear inside a walk-in freezer with strangers. We provide a comfortable, personal experience and always have one of our friendly, knowledgeable staff members guide you through the entire process.

More +

Instead of talking to you through an intercom, they will be just a few feet away, monitoring you in the chamber and talking you through the session, and having you turn every 15 seconds. This provides a level of comfort and communication that our customers always appreciate.

Check-in

Check in with the front desk and complete your waiver upon arrival. You will be shown to a private dressing room and remove all clothing. To ensure that your skin is dry, facial tissues are provided. Do not apply lotions, oils, perfume or any alcohol-based products prior to your session. Crio provides you with socks, shoes, gloves and a robe.

More +

Men:  You must wear briefs, boxers or swim trunks. Undergarments must be dry for your safety. A towel can be provided if needed.

Women: You may wear undergarments, a bathing suit or a soft bra (no metal underwire), but it is not necessary.

For your safety, please remove all jewelry from the neck down before entering the cryo-chamber (rings are permitted as you will be wearing gloves). Metal items that cannot be removed can be wrapped in an Ace bandage or a sock. Metal inside the body is safe because it is insulated from the cold temperature.

Once dressed in your protective clothing, you will enter the cryotherapy room. Your technician will explain the process, answer any questions and be with you for the entire session. You are now ready for your cryotherapy experience! Note: We respect your privacy. We will only see your face, as the rest of your body will be in the cryochamber. You will remove your robe once inside the chamber and the technician will start the session. Cryotherapy sessions last for 2 ½ to 3 minutes, based on tolerance, but most clients find the 3-minute treatment to be quite manageable.

After completing your session, you will return to your private dressing room already feeling rejuvenated! You can then change back into your own clothes. A 5-10 minute warm-up (brisk walk) is recommended to help boost blood circulation.

Q: Can I catch a cold using Whole Body Cryotherapy?

A: No. The therapy actually stimulates your immune system to help fight the severity and frequency of colds.

Q: How long does it take? Is a shower necessary?

A: Your session can last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 minutes depending on your tolerance. No shower is needed. It is a completely dry process, leaving your dry after your session. Come in for a session while out and about, on your lunch break, or at the start of your day. There are no restrictions to your activities after your session.

Q: How many sessions do I need to see optimal results?

A: You should aim for 5 to 10 sessions in close succession (every other day) depending on the condition/goals that you are trying to achieve. Changes in skin and weight loss will take longer, requiring a series of treatments. A maintenance program of 1 to 3 times a week is appropriate for most people.

Q: How will I feel immediately after my session?

A: You will feel refreshed and renewed! The hormones (endorphins) that make you feel good and energetic are released during your session. With some conditions, clients may feel immediate relief, while other conditions may take a few days or a cumulative effect to see changes. Many clients have reported the best night of sleep after their session. Towards the end of your session, one may experience a temporary “pins and needles” sensation, which goes away quickly as you warm up. Most find the sessions to be a very tolerable three minutes.

Q: Is exercise recommended after my session?

A: Yes. We suggest a brisk walk or exercise (5-10 minutes) after your session to help your blood vessels dilate, extend the period of analgesic effect and enhance feelings of well-being. Cryotherapy after exercise will help aid recovery and reduce inflammation.

Q: Is it dangerous?

A: No. The liquid nitrogen does not make contact with your skin. It is the same nitrogen that is in our atmosphere. The air we breathe is composed of 16% oxygen, 1% hydrogen, 78% nitrogen and 5% other elements. During the session, your head is above the chamber and you will be breathing normal room air. For added safety, we use oxygen monitors and a trained technician is always present to control temperature and monitor your comfort.

Q: May I still have a cryotherapy session if I am claustrophobic?

A: Yes, the design of the octagon chamber allows your head to be free above the upper rim of the chamber. The door is never locked for quick and easy exit at any time. You are able to see your technician at all times, and we try to keep you distracted during your session.

Q: What are the risks?

A: Cryotherapy has minimal risks: fluctuation in blood pressure by up to 10 points (systolic), which reverses upon exit of the chamber, allergic reaction to cold (rare), activation of some viral conditions (cold sores), etc. due to immune system stimulation, claustrophobia, anxiety and temporary redness of the skin (chilblains). Chilblains (small, itchy red swellings) on extremities occur rarely as an abnormal skin reaction but do resolve in a few days.

Q: Who should NOT use cryotherapy?

A: People with untreated hypertension, heart attack within the previous 6 months, decompensating diseases (edema) of the cardiovascular and respiratory system, congestive heart failure, COPD, chronic liver disease, unstable angina pectoris, pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) within previous 6 months or known circulatory dysfunction, acute febrile respiratory (flu-like respiratory conditions), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases, severe anemia, Cold Allergenic Phenomenon (known allergy to cold contactants), heavy consumerist diseases (abnormal bleeding), seizure disorders, bacterial and viral infections of the skin, wound-healing disorders (open sores or discharging wound/skin conditions), alcohol- and drug-related contraindications, valvular heart disease, condition after heart surgery, ischemic heart disease, Raynaud’s disease, polyneuropathies, pregnancy, vasculitis, claustrophobia, hyperhidrosis (heavy perspiration) or advanced diabetes.
